‘This is very real’: Gov. Kay Ivey closing nonessential businesses statewide

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) - UPDATE: Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has announced all nonessential businesses statewide are to be closed starting Saturday at 5 p.m.

The closure is scheduled for March 28 through April 17.

Gov. Ivey specifically says she and her assembled task force do not want to shut down businesses across the state. She added a statewide shelter-in-place will not be ordered.

A full list of businesses considered nonessential are included in the tweet below:

ORIGINAL: Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. on Friday to give an update on COVID-19 in the state.

State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris will also be part of the press conference.
