Worker charged in fatal shooting at Tuscaloosa Co. automotive plant
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - A woman has been charged in a homicide at a Tuscaloosa County automotive plant.
Angela Nichole Mayo, 28, turned herself in for the fatal shooting of a co-worker at Lear Corporation, police say. Mayo has been charged with one count of murder and is being held at the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit responded to Lear Cooperation in the 17400 block of Brookwood Parkway in Vance on Sunday per request of the Brookwood Police Department. Responders found 27-year-old Shanina Smith deceased at the scene. Authorities say the victim was shot multiple times on the assembly line in a work space.
Court documents say Mayo admitted to shooting Smith several times while standing over her. Mayo says she shot Smith because she brushed up against her and had been picking on her at work for the last eight months.
Mayo reportedly left the plant after the shooting but later turned herself in. Authorities say the shooting was witnessed by numerous employees.
Lear Corporation released the following statement:
“We have been in contact with Shanina’s family and our hearts and prayers are with them on this truly tragic day. Additionally, we have engaged professional grief counselors who are now onsite and will remain as long as it takes to provide services to any employees who are in need. At this time, we have no further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are fully cooperating with authorities. We ask that any further questions be directed to local law enforcement conducting the investigation.”
