National Train A Teacher Day
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Teachers across the country are being offered a chance to receive free self defense training on “National Train A Teacher Day” during the weekend of July 20th.
Sheepdog Firearms is conducting several courses on July 20 and 21.
"The instructors that are associated with national train a teacher day, we’re absolutely against a government sponsored armed teacher program. That’s up to the school systems, administrators, school boards, and teachers to discuss. But hopefully when they leave these classes, they are better informed,” said Glass.
While there is a basic handgun glass, things like self-defense by using pepper spray, how to respond to and survive in an active shooter situation, dealing with basic trauma and bleeding control will also be discussed in a class.
"In all our self-defense courses, or the ones that I teach, I tell everybody that you are your own first responder. The next guy is the professional, but you are your own first responder,” said Glass.
Sheepdog Firearms says most of the courses are close to being filled. They are open to educators and anyone that teaches young people. That includes people like Sunday school teachers and even scout leaders.
