Family member identifies elderly woman killed in Fairfield house fire

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WBRC) - Fairfield fire confirm an elderly woman died this morning in a Fairfield house fire.

A family member identified the victim as 90-year-old Virginia Carter.

There were two occupants in the home - the victim and the family member. The family member says he smelled smoke then tried to put out the fire while yelling for the victim to leave the home. He says she could not leave due to the intense smoke and told him to go.

The home is located in the 700 block of 41st Street. Birmingham Fire says it received a call at 4:52 a.m. to assist Fairfield in extinguishing the fire.

We’re told the roof has collapsed and the home is a total loss.

The fire is under investigation. The Alabama State Fire Marshal has been called to assist.
