Birmingham Barons celebrate 23rd Rickwood Classic

Barons play Biscuits at Rickwood Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Thousands of baseball fans went back in time for the 23rd annual Rickwood Classic on Wednesday.

The Birmingham Barons threw it back to August 18, 1910, when Rickwood Field held its inaugural game between the Birmingham Coal Barons and the Montgomery Climbers.

From iconic players like Willie Mays to the old manual scoreboard, Rickwood Field is full of history and is one of the top 100 places to visit in America.

The field is currently the oldest ballpark in America.

“I came here all the way from California. Rickwood Field brought me here. I’m a member of a club and seeing all the rich history here is awesome,” said baseball fan Kevin Summers.

Former MLB star and manager Lou Piniella was this year’s special guest. Piniella threw out the first pitch and signed autographs at the game.
