JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) - The Jefferson County Department of Environmental Services is advising residents to avoid fishing, swimming and boating in the Bayview Lake and Village Creek area this weekend following a sewage spill at its Village Creek Water Reclamation Facility.
According to Environmental Services Director David Denard, the spill was approximately 80,000 gallons. Officials say the water should be avoided until testing is complete, and the overflow does not affect public drinking water.
“We are exercising an abundance of caution with this spill and want to advise the public to avoid swimming, fishing and boating from Highway 269 to the end of Bayview Lake through Monday, May 20,” said Denard. “In addition to notifying the media we are putting out signs in the area as well as using our social media notifications. We will be testing the water in the area throughout the weekend and will release updates as needed.”
