BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The Bessemer City High School football coaching staff has been fired in response to violations of Alabama High School Athletic Association rules.
The Bessemer City School Board voted 5-2 in support of District Superintendent Dr. Keith Stewart’s recommendation that the coaches contracts not be renewed. The vote took place during a board meeting Tuesday night.
The move is in response to unauthorized practices held by the coaching staff outside of the regular season.
“I understand this situation is a difficult one for everyone involved- students, parents and coaches,” said Dr. Stewart. “However, once we were made aware of the issue, the District was required to investigate, take action, and accept the consequences.”
In addition to the loss of it’s coaching staff, the football team is suspended from 10 days of Spring Training, they must forfeit their spring game against Oak Mountain, remove all 2019 summer competition dates from the 2019-2020 school year and student athletes will not be allowed to attend summer athletic camps as a team.
The Board approved the appointment of an interim coach for strength and conditioning.
