BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The funeral for Chris McNair will be held at the 16th Street Baptist Church, the same place where his daughter, Denise. and three other girls were killed in a bombing in 1963.
McNair’s family said the former Jefferson County Commissioner and State Representative passed away Wednesday afternoon at his home. He was 93.
A visitation for McNair will be held Thursday, May 16 from 5-7 p.m. at Davenport and Harris Funeral Home. His funeral will be held on Friday, May 17th at 11 a.m. at the church. McNair will be buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
He began his career in politics in the 1970′s when he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. He served two terms and was the chairman of the Jefferson County Delegation. In 1986, he was elected to the Jefferson County Commission, where he served until his resignation in 2001.
Five years later, a jury convicted McNair of bribery and conspiracy in an investigation related to Jefferson County’s sewer project. He was granted compassionate release and left prison in 2013.
