CULLMAN, AL (WBRC) - Cullman will face Hazel Green in the AHSAA baseball playoffs and it’s a series the Bearcats have been looking for since last year when Hazel Green eliminated Cullman in the fourth round.
“We’ve always had a bad taste in our mouth after that series," said Cullman second baseman Cooper Beck.
The Bearcats will seek revenge Thursday afternoon when they take on the defending 6A champs. Cullman is one of the hottest teams in the state right now. They’ve won 14 of their past 15 games.
“You have two teams here who have prided themselves on doing the little things that can help you win games and it’s about who goes out there and executes, this is by far the biggest challenge we will have to face all year," said Cullman baseball coach Brent Patterson.
“Being a senior, winning this series would mean everything. I mean, beating respectively the best team in 6A, it doesn’t get any better than that," Beck said.
Cullman’s success on the baseball field started with the standard previous teams set years ago. The Bearcats have played in the state championship game 11 times since 2002.
“These guys are playing for much bigger than themselves, they’re playing for the history of our program and they’re playing for the stories of the guys that they’ve heard about for years since they were growing up in this town so they want to make their own stories,” said Patterson.
And a storybook ending would be hoisting up another blue map.
