BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Gardendale Park and Recreation Department is working on an extension to Five Mile Creek Greenway at Black Creek Park.

The project is part of the Rails-to-Trails project. The hiking and biking trail is currently three and half miles long, starting at Black Creek Park.

The new part of the trail goes from Shady Grove Road to Fieldstown Road. It will soon end at Jew Hollow Rd.

“That will open up a five-and-half mile corridor that you could bike and walk,” said Dale Hyche, Gardendale Parks and Recreation Department Superintendent. “Each location, there will be a small trail head with signage and gates.”

Gardendale is teaming up with The Freshwater Land Trust for the project. They're planning a ribbon cutting for the new extension in early in June.

Five Mile Creek Greenway will eventually stretch 16 miles, making it the longest rail trail in Jefferson County.
