Birmingham Bulls looking for first-ever hockey championship

Bulls to play for SPHL Championship

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Winning a professional hockey championship is something that’s never been done before here in Birmingham and the Birmingham Bulls are ready to change that.

“We’ve prepared every day of the season for this weekend, I think everyone’s over the moon excited,” said Bulls defenseman Andrew Darrigo.

The Bulls will play for the Southern Professional Hockey League President’s Cup against in-state rival Huntsville Havoc this weekend in the best-of-three finals.

“You know, they’re the defending champs and they have what we want so, they’ve won it before so they know what to do and we’re coming in hungry for it,” said Bulls head coach Jamey Hicks.

The Bulls’ success on the ice this year all started before the season. Coach Hicks said last year’s team laid the foundation, but this year’s team, everyone’s bought in and all they want to do is make history.

“There are a lot of guys here, I don’t know if any of us have ever won a professional championship before. You work so hard for it and your entire life to be in this moment so it would mean everything,” Darrigo said.

“I know it would be really big for the guys, a lot of guys go their whole careers without a championship so when you get this close, obviously you want good things to happen,” Coach Hicks added.

The Bulls will have home-rink advantage for game one this Friday at the Pelham Civic Complex.

“Our fans are the best. They come out and support us and they make this rink the hardest one to play in, it’s amazing,” said Darrigo.
