GARDENDALE, AL (WBRC) - Children in Gardendale only have to wait two more weeks before getting to enjoy a new addition at the city’s Kenny Clemons Park off Fieldstown Road.
The new toddler area is scheduled to open May 1st. That’s the same day the park’s splash pad opens. According to Dale Hyche, the Superintendent for Gardendale’s Park and Recreation Department, having two separate areas is a big deal for parents.
“It tries to keep all the little ones sectioned away from bigger kids having fun at our regular splash pad,” said Hyche.
The new toddler area is for children ages six and under.
That’s not the only new addition you’ll see at Kenny Clemons Park. Crews were out on Wednesday working on the new flag football field, which Hyche said will be sodded with irrigation.
“Originally we had two fields,” explained Hyche. “We outgrew them. We went from about 120 kids to currently we have 240 kids."
The new field is expected to be finished by the middle of next month.
The park is also getting new lights. Hyche said those added lights to one of the fields will make it possible for flag football and soccer practice, as well as games, to take place at night.
“Cost of the projects should be around $80,000 for everything,” said Hyche. “Everything so far has been in house, as far as construction of the flag football field and the splash pad addition.”
According to Hyche, an outside contractor added the new lights. He said that’s the only project not done by the park and rec department.
