BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Plans of a Major League Baseball youth academy coming to Birmingham have ended.

City Council President Valerie Abbott confirmed MLB has pulled plans to develop a youth academy at George Ward Park.

Abbott says Councilor William Parker received an email from MLB “a few weeks ago.” Glen Iris neighborhood president Hope Cooper says she received an email from MLB’s Tony Reagins that said "the timing is not right and quite frankly may never be.”

Cooper has been in touch with MLB. Cooper says MLB is looking at Vero Beach, Florida, for the new location.

An official with MLB provided the following statement:

“Our position is unchanged from my last statement. We are committed to providing opportunities and programming for young people around the country and have shifted our focus to our recent acquisition of Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, FL.”
