HOOVER, AL (WBRC) - Hoover police continue investigating a fatal shooting at a Hoover apartment complex.

Lt. Keith Czeskleba says officers responded to Nine90 Wisteria Apartments at 2:44 p.m. on a report of a person shot and found 29-year-old Keith Terrell Cooperwood lying in the parking lot. He was suffering from at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at 3:02 p.m.

Police say the alleged shooter fled but later turned himself in. Detectives interviewed the man and after consulting with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office released the man pending further investigation.

Lt. Czeskleba says witnesses told police the victim and another man were initially involved in a verbal argument in the parking lot of the 1300 building. The victim walked to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun, police say. He approached the man again and as the altercation continued, shots were fired.

The coroner’s office said the death was due to shooting and ruled the death a homicide.
