BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Some drivers are concerned about the impact thousands of additional vehicles will have on side roads and detours through downtown Birmingham because of the 59/20 bridge project.
Carraway Boulevard and Highway 31 make up the main detours to get around the project.
“Traffic is flowing pretty good right now. I got out of here about 7:30 this morning. It wasn’t bad. It was moving,” said driver Anquez Jackson.
ALDOT is monitoring the traffic flow. They are responsible for state roads. ALDOT hopes to hold off on repairs until the 59/20 bridge project is finished and make an evaluation of their condition. But, they are prepared if there is a need to make repairs to cause fewer problems.
The city of Birmingham is also monitoring the roads to see if they have to make emergency repairs.
