Dr. Cameron Askew “Doing Good” as a Komen Big Wig
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Sometimes you have to do something silly to achieve something serious. That’s exactly what Dr. Cameron Askew is doing wearing a pink wig as she talks to her patients.
She is a Big Wig for the local chapter of Komen in the fight against breast cancer. She’ll be wearing the wig for the next six weeks to raise awareness of breast cancer and raise money to fight the disease. She says, “Pink is fun and this is fun but it’s serious. We do this to get attention but we want to remind you we’re trying to cure a disease and give people access to that care.”
Dr. Askew usually has a more conventional look at her office in Brookwood Medical Center where she specializes in bariatric and general surgery. She has seen the heartache breast cancer can cause in her patients and in her own friends and family. That's one reason she is a Big Wig. "We want research to change the aggressive and advanced breast cancers still causing deaths each year. If we don't do it nobody will. Every little bit counts, tiny donations, nothing is too small. Everything helps."
Dr. Askew is one of six Komen Big Wigs in the Birmingham area. They hope to raise $15,000 in the fight against breast cancer. To learn more about Komen and to make your donation click here.
