TRUSSVILLE, AL (WBRC) - Family, friends and fellow officers gathered Friday to begin saying goodbye to fallen Birmingham Police Sgt. Wytasha Carter.
Carter’s visitation was held at a Trussville funeral home. He was shot and killed by a suspect early Sunday morning while working a special detail aimed at stopping car break-ins in the city.
Hundreds of people showed up to pay their respects including Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and Police Chief Patrick Smith.
“This was one of our own. This was a decorated sergeant, that was out here trying to make a difference and ultimately paid the sacrifice that we all understand is there, but until it hits home, you see this and it really puts everything in check,” said Sgt. Heath Boackle, president of Birmingham Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1.
