BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham police say the officer who remains in the hospital after being shot Sunday is doing much better and is now listed in stable condition.
That officer was working alongside Sergeant Wytasha Carter early Sunday morning investigating a string of car break-ins. The shooting happened after the two officers approached some suspects.
Carter died from his injuries. His funeral is planned for this weekend.
Authorities have not yet identified the suspects. A representative with the State Bureau of Investigation told us they are not releasing any information at this time, citing the ongoing investigation.
Birmingham Chief Patrick Smith said one of the suspects is still in the hospital while the other has been released from custody. He did not say why and adds they are letting SBI handle the situation right now.
