Wes: Plan on breaking out the heavy jacket Monday

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The sky will remain mostly cloudy overnight, with temperatures tumbling into the upper 30s. The sky will also remain mostly cloudy Monday and this is going to help keep daytime temperatures in the cold 30s and low 40s. We will also have a cold northwest wind that will add to the chill. Some clearing will begin later in the day and since temps won’t have much time to recover, you can expect a big drop in temperatures Monday night! Freezing temperatures will be likely Tuesday morning, with lows in the 20s. I would make sure the faucets are covered and pipes are well insulated. We will enjoy some sunny weather on Tuesday and especially on Wednesday, which will be the top two weather days of the week. We will start off in the freezing range again on Wednesday morning however, temperatures will make a nice rebound into the upper 50s during the afternoon.

FIRST ALERT FOR RAIN THURSDAY: Moisture will be on the return as the next storm system impacts the state Thursday. I’m expecting another period of light to moderate rain for late Thursday and during the overnight. This first round of rain should taper off to scattered showers early Friday morning and we should catch a break in the wet weather during the day. The trailing cold front will sweep into the region on Saturday and this will bring a round of heavier rain, with the possibility of a thunderstorm. I can’t rule out a strong storm south of I-20 on Saturday, with the possibility of gusty winds. However, the risk is very low and for now I’m not expecting an organized risk of severe weather.

VERY COLD AIR ARRIVES SUNDAY: Long range data has been advertising some very cold air for Sunday, with highs dropping into the 30s. We are leaning towards the longer range Euro Guidance, which suggests the deeper moisture will exit before this frigid air arrives. So for now we are leaving out any mention of significant frozen precipitation. I can’t rule out a few snow flurries before the clouds move out on Sunday but the bigger story will be the cold air. Highs will only reach the mid to upper 30s, with lows at night tumbling into the 20s. Stay tuned to our WBRC First Alert Weather App as we fine tune the forecast. I will also share the new data regarding timing in my forecast at 9, 9:30, and 10 p.m.
