New mental health facility possibly replacing old UAB Medical West

Mental health facility possibly coming to Bessemer

BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) - Many are welcoming news that the old UAB Medical West hospital may become a new mental health facility.

Keith Pennington, CEO of UAB Medical West, released the following statement:

“Plans involve the possibility of turning the rest of the faculty into a mental health hospital serving the residents of Jefferson County and surrounding regions."

Jefferson County Commssioner Jimmie Stephens said the area needs additional psychiatric services.

“We have veterans that need that and we have people in our criminal justice system that are better served through mental health,” he said.

Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley is not saying too much until more information is released. Gulley did release the following statement:

“I’m keeping in touch with Hospital officials about my desire to see the current site be used to benefit the residents of Bessemer into the future."

Some who live near the hospital support the idea. Jefferson County Commssioner LaShunda Scales wants to be assured residents will be safe.

“We have to acknowledge when you have s Facility there are safeguards in place to protect the citizens adjacent to that property.” Scales said.
