Loaded gun found in possession of student at Bessemer City Middle School

BESEMMER, AL (WBRC) - Bessemer Middle School was placed under a 90-minute lockdown this afternoon after a gun was found in possession of a student.

Authorities say the firearm was loaded. There were no injuries.

The lockdown happened around 12:30 p.m.

Superintendent Dr. Keith Stewart says the principal and school resource officer got a tip something was not right with one student. They found the student and searched him and his backpack, which is where they found the gun.]

As a precaution, the school was locked down and more searched conducted. Nothing else was found.

All parents were notified by the school’s alert system. Dr. Stewart praised the principal and the SRO, noting that students trusted them with information. A spokesman for the Bessemer Police Department says that is key to prevent any sort of tragedy.

Dr. Stewart says this was not the case of bullying where this student felted threatened. The 13-year-old will face the school system’s code of conduct and possible expulsion.We will provide more information when it is provided.
