Gardendale hair stylist shot, killed in hunting accident

Woman killed during hunting trip

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department reported Donna Doran, 48, died in a hunting accident Sunday.

Her death is now under investigation.

Doran was a beloved hair stylist in Gardendale.

We spoke with Sandra Jerkins who has been a client and friend of Doran’s for close to three decades.

Jerkins said Doran’s death just adds to the heartbreak her family’s had to go through.

Doran’s son was killed in a motorcycle wreck in August.

“Oh, that smile. Walking into the beauty shop, she would say, ‘Hey Miss Sandy!’ And she’d say, ‘Go on back to the bowl.’ You know, the shampoo room,” recalled Jerkins. “But she was always smiling. Just upbeat. Even if it took a lot of extra effort to be that way.”

Jerkins met Doran in 1991 and has been seeing her almost every week since then to get her hair done.

“I saw her once a week,” she said. “So, you know, you get to know somebody during that time.”

So when Jerkins heard about Doran’s death, she didn’t want to believe it.

“It just hasn’t really hit me yet,” she said. “It doesn’t seem real that she’s gone. I’m not going to be able to reach out and touch her.”

The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department telling us it happened on Centerpoint Road south of Dadeville Sunday just before noon.

The initial report said someone removed a rifle from the rear seat of a vehicle when the weapon discharged, killing Doran.

“It has to be rough on her husband,” said Jerkins. “It has to be rough on him. Because Donna adored her family, and likewise, I’m sure they adored her. It has to be rough on all of them. I just can’t imagine.”

Jerkins said she hasn’t just lost a hair stylist, but also a close friend.

“She was just made of love because that’s what she was," said Jerkins.

The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department is working with Alabama Game and Fish in this investigation relating to her death.

The investigation is pending results of an autopsy from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

They are not releasing the name of the person with her on the hunting trip at this time.
