BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A firm out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, announced Tuesday they are teaming up to build a 17-story mixed-use building that could house more than 500 UAB students.
Some business owners in the area like the idea. “I think it’s excellent. I think it will improve business in this area and definitely improve the college. So I think it’s a very good Idea. I look forward to it,” said Dr. Ed Martin with the Alabama Hypnosis Clinic.
The project will be built where The Break used to be on 20th Street. The developer sees it as a plus for the UAB campus to be within walking distance. They also say the Five Points South Neighborhood Association and Five Points Merchant’s Group have been supportive.
But the owner of Five Points Paint and Hardware has doubts about the project. “It’s not going to do me any good at all. Students come in occasionally. A student came in here this morning who didn’t have $5 to buy a brush,” said Wayne Cleage.
Cleage and some other retail businesses in Five Points are also expressing concerns about the lack of parking already in the area. “If you don’t have a parking lot any more in Five Points, you might as well not even open because you won’t have any place to park,” Cleage said.
The developer says there will be secured parking for the building. A rooftop pool and grilling station will also be available. The completion of the project is expected in Fall 2020.
