Update on triple shooting in Attalla

ATTALLA, AL (WBRC) - The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal triple shooting at an Attalla business.

Authorities say three people were shot, including one person who was killed, at Hammett’s Towing on Wesson Lake Road on Thursday.

Police confirm the deceased victim is 22-year-old Steven McElrath of Fort Payne. The shop’s owner, 41-year-old Donnie Hammett, is in critical but stable condition at UAB and 29-year-old Brandon Chandler, of Fort Payne, is in stable condition.

The call was received shortly before 1 p.m.

“We know it stemmed from some type of argument. We know one of the gunshot victims was an employee here. We don’t have a lot of information on why the other two were here," said Etowah Co. Sheriff’s Office Capt. Josh Morgan. "We’re not sure if it was an argument over a vehicle, or items, or items, or what. We don’t know that at this point.”

We will provide more information when it is available.
