HAMILTON, AL (WBRC) - Hamilton’s police chief says the man who allegedly shot and killed the father of his girlfriend’s children has been charged with capital murder.
Chief Ronny Vickery confirmed earlier this week was killed in a shooting outside the police department on Christmas afternoon.
Chief Vickery says a mother was with her boyfriend when she was dropping off her children with their father in the parking lot outside the police department.
That’s when police say the woman’s boyfriend, Andy Cochran, shot and killed the father of the children.
Chief Vickery says the capital murder charge enhancement from the original murder charge is because the parent was killed in front of children under the age of 14.
The victim has not yet been identified by police.
“It’s a tragedy, just a tragedy,” Chief Vickery said.
“There were some words exchanged between the father and his ex,” Chief Vickery said.
Chief Vickery says many couples who are divorced use the police department’s parking lot to drop off children with the other parent on weekends or holidays because it is considered a safe place to do so.
