(WBRC) - High school football players all over the nation Wednesday morning finally got the chance to sign papers to announce the place they’ll call home for the next four years.
Early signing gives players the opportunity to enroll in college early. They’ll start their college careers in January, as opposed to next fall. This opportunity enhances their chances of learning their respective playing systems and practice with the team a semester early.
The traditional national signing day will still be in February.
The Warriors had five players sign on Wednesday, headlined by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa signing to join his brother, Tua, at the University of Alabama. Offensive lineman Amari Kight also signed with the Crimson Tide.
In Thompson’s strong early signing day class, Shadrick Byrd signed with the Iowa Hawkeyes and Jayme Simmons and Will Connor each inked their letter of intent with UAB.
Back-to-back Class 6A state champion Pinson Valley had two players sign, including quarterback Bo Nix. Nix, the all-time career passing yards leader in AHSAA history. Nix follows his father and Indians head coach, Patrick Nix, who played quarterback at Auburn from 1992-95.
Geordan Pollard took the stage on Wednesday, as well. The wide receiver signed with Austin Peay.
Twin brothers Damon (left in the video below) and Damien (right) Miller will remain teammates in the coming years. The safeties signed with UAB on Wednesday. Hear them talk about their decisions below.
Early signing day at Jackson-Olin was highlighted by big-time defensive lineman Vonta Bentley. He signed with Clemson.
Alvin Toney and Jammal Abrams are staying local for college ball. Toney signed with Samford and Abrams will play at UAB.
Numerous other local players signed their letters of intent on Wednesday, including Hewitt-Trussville’s Paul Tyson and Pierce Quick and Hoover’s Will Reichard, all of whom signed at Alabama.
