Church security meeting teaches self-defense during worship

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - It’s an unsettling fact that houses of worship have become places of violence.

Examples can be found in Texas, South Carolina and Pennsylvania.

“Since 1999 there have been over 1,7000 violent church attacks. Last year we had 261 violent church attack,” said Barry Young with Strategos International.

Young is a former police Chaplin. He is now VP of Strategos International, a company made of Christian former law enforcement members teaching church security around the world.

“You have to be your own first responder. Just like the bar shooting and the synagogues shootings. We want people responsible for their own safety.” Young said.

On Thursday, Strategos met at Huffman Baptist Church. The Birmingham Baptist Association helped arrange the meeting in hopes of getting training for church representatives.

“The pastor said I know your wife has a gun in her purse, we will let her be in charge. I thought that was a terrible idea.” said Michael Ethridge with the Birmingham Baptist Association.

Young showed the representatives to handle certain situations even a parking lot. The recent violence at a California bar reinforces the need for training.

“It’s more evidence the world we are living in today is different than the world we grew up in. Evil is out there,” Etheridge said.
