Calera PD arrest 15-year-old in connection to high school threat

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Calera police say a 15-year-old was arrested in connection to terroristic threats that circulated on social media.

Police say the suspect is from Calera and his name is being withheld because of his juvenile status. They say the investigation is ongoing and there is limited information to release, but police say there is no information to believe Calera schools are in any danger.

The Shelby County School District released the following statement about the arrest:

"The Shelby County School District has been informed by Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley that an arrest has been made in connection to threats that were made on social media against Calera High School.

The school district is appreciative of the hard work by local law enforcement to thoroughly investigate this case, while also providing an increased presence in our schools to ensure student safety."

Calera police have released a statement regarding a school threat that targeted Calera High School on Thursday.

This is the statement posted to Facebook around 7:45 a.m.

"The Calera Police Department received information about a threat being made to shoot up the high school at 12:00 p.m. today. A text message was anonymously sent to a student making the threat. The message was then posted on social media. This information was thoroughly investigated throughout the night and involved the assistance of the FBI. We have made contact of with those involved in circulating the text. While we will continue to take this case seriously, we do not believe this to be a creditable threat. However, we will maintain an increased presence at the schools while we continue to investigate this case. "

No arrests have been announced at this time. Cindy Warner with the Shelby County school system also released a statement.

“Late Wednesday night, Shelby County Schools became aware of a possible social media threat at Calera High School. We immediately made contact with the Calera Police Department, who was aware of the matter and already investigating. According to Calera Police Department, the information was thoroughly investigated throughout the night and involved the assistance of the FBI. The Calera Police Department does not consider this to be a credible threat; however, they are maintaining an increased presence in the schools in the Calera community as this investigation continues. Calera High School continues to work with the various law enforcement agencies to ensure student safety.”
