Birmingham BOE signs off on leases for Church of the Highlands to use space in schools

Birmingham's BOE decided the Church of the Highlands can continue to worship in two schools

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) --Birmingham’s City School board has decided the Church of the Highlands can continue to worship at two city schools.

The school board voted Tuesday on leases for Highlands to use space at Parker and Woodlawn High School. The board also voted to let Iron City Church use space at Ramsay high School.

Some board members feel the leasing process was rushed. A few weeks ago, the board president said the district’s operations director entered into the leases without the board knowing about them. Some board members feel the process could have been more transparent.

“As we make these decisions, we have to be fair in terms of being transparent on both ends. And this did not have to be problematic if it was done in decency and in order,” Daagye Hendricks, a school board member said.

“I cannot say it strong enough, I’m not against churches helping and partnering with us but it needs to be a partnership not through a lease agreement,” Terri Michal, another board member said.

This past Sunday, Church of the Highlands did hold its first service at Parker High School. Highlands declined to comment after the school board meeting.

We’re still waiting to find out if any disciplinary action was taken against the board’s operations director.
