BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The following is an editorial from WBRC FOX6 News General Manager Collin Gaston, which first aired on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018:
What is it about being behind the wheel of a car that turns some people into raving lunatics? Case in point, just last week a man from Alabaster traveling on I-20, with his 8 and 10-year-old children, honked at a man that cut him off. We've all done it, right? Someone is either about to hit you or is just driving erratically enough near you to warrant a horn blast. What happened next is beyond comprehension. The individual driving the car that was honked at proceeded to shoot at the honking car, resulting in the back windows being blown out by gunfire. Thankfully no one was hurt, but this could have easily ended in a tragedy. I can't even imagine the horror the children felt as bullets blasted the windows out of their moving car.
This is a simple message to be careful out there on the roads. 1.) You never know what others are going through that may be on the receiving end of your honk or your own aggressive driving. 2.) Is laying on your horn, getting on their bumper, cutting them off, or giving them a distinctive finger gesture going to solve anything? The answer is no, and with this recent example of someone literally willing to kill another due to a horn - we all need to stay calm, take a breath and just let it go.
