University of Alabama System chancellor to retire next month

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The chancellor of the University of Alabama System has announced his retirement.

The Tuscaloosa News reports 64-year-old Ray Hayes said Friday that he will continue in his role through the end of July. Hayes says it's the right time to retire, citing the school's position and his passion for behavioral health work.

Hayes plans to return to the school in September as chancellor emeritus to work on initiatives involving behavioral health and health care. He says he will continue working with groups on and off the school's campuses to support the university's behavioral health resources.

Hayes was appointed chancellor in 2016 at the recommendation of his predecessor Robert Witt. Hayes previously served as executive vice chancellor since 2013. He was hired in 2006 as the vice chancellor for financial affairs.
