BIBB COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Many active shooting events happen in less than 5 minutes, according to Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade.
It could take his deputies at least 15 minutes to respond to an emergency at some of the at least 100 Baptist churches alone in the county.
That's why he organized a meeting Tuesday night to talk with church members about safety plans they could create for their specific congregations.
It's in light of the recent church shootings, including one in Texas where 26 people were killed.
Sheriff Wade wants them to start thinking about how to lookout for specific problems that might arise and safety plans.
Those plans could include up to having armed church members inside the building and or the parking lot.
"I don't think they need to be standing at the doorway with AR 15's being intimidating, but I do think they need to be ready in case something happens," Wade explained.
That meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the First Baptist Church at 1249 Main Street in West Blocton.
