HOOVER, AL (WBRC) - If you've driven down Highway 150 or Interstate 459 in Hoover you've probably seen a large lot, completely cleared. It's making way for a brand new shopping center known as Stadium Trace Village.
"The big part of this development is that it will be walkable and being walkable is a big deal to the city," said Councilman Mike Shaw, who also serves on the planning and zoning commission.
Shaw is talking about the village center which will feature several small shops and restaurants.
"You can walk within it from store to store. But you can also walk outside from other surrounding neighborhoods into the development also. You don't have to drive there. That's a big part of this," said Shaw.
The planning and zoning commission approved initial plans for the development Monday night, which also includes a large retail store, an office building, and an even organic grocery store.
One of the big concerns with the new development is increased traffic along Highway 150 and Stadium Trace Parkway. The developers are working on a plan.
"Traffic continues to be a significant concern out there and it's obviously something that we care about and the developer cares about it too," said Shaw.
Everything from new turn lanes to new traffic signals are being proposed. The plan now moves to the city council for approval.
