BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Alabama Department of Transportation is continuing to work on bringing down all of the bridges on Interstate 59/20 in downtown Birmingham by fall of 2018.

The head of ALDOT says in preparation for the work, they have to shut down part of the interstate this weekend. This will be east of the I-59/20 and I-65 junction just affecting the north and east traffic.

"We have to install a steel beam that will span most of that interchange," said DeJarvis Leonard, ALDOT's regional engineer said.

Leonard said ALDOT's traffic signs will provide warning information.

He suggests taking alternative routes. Get off at Arkadelphia and go Findley Boulevard to 65 to get back on I-59/20 or if you are on I-65 North, get off at Fifth Avenue take that to Red Mountain Expressway.

If you are traveling I-65, you are not affected by the construction.

"During that time, drivers need to take alternative routes. They need to be mindful of traffic controls that will be installed," Leonard said.

Leonard adds the access ramps to I-65 North and South off of I-59/20 North and East will also be closed during the time period.

ALDOT says drivers need to slow down in the construction area and they ask drivers to be patient.
