Mike talked with longtime college football reporter Lars Anderson of Bleacher Report, formerly with Sports Illustrated. They discussed the College Football Playoff rankings that kept the top four teams the same this week.
Lars say right now when he spins the clock forward he sees the Final Four being Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Yes, he thinks the Badgers will run the table in impressive fashion, go undefeated, and be that fourth team that makes it in. But he also still thinks there is a chance for two SEC teams, especially if Georgia can beat Auburn on Saturday and then stay close to Alabama in the SEC title game.
Lars also says that he thinks Gus Malzahn can secure his job for the year if he can beat at least one - Georgia or Alabama. He says Gus' future will come down to how he fares against Georgia and 'Bama. A lot of sins will be forgiven if he splits these games. But if he goes 0-2, you can go ahead and print the obituary on his career at Auburn. The Gus Bus will be rolling out of town.
When it comes to injuries for Alabama linebackers, Lars says this is getting serious. Now Alabama is dangerously thin at linebacker. The young player to really keep an eye on is linebacker Dylan Moses. He was the No. 5 overall recruit in the nation last year according to ESPN and he had 1.5 sacks against LSU. He has the potential to be very, very special -- and now he'll need to be.
Lars says we should expect lots of coaching changes this year. At Florida, where Jim McElwain has been fired, the top target he is hearing is Scott Frost, the former Nebraska QB who is now at Central Florida. Nebraska is also going after Frost, so a bidding war could be brewing. At Tennessee, Lars thinks Butch Jones's tenure is already six feet under. Look for the Vols to aggressively go after Dan Mullen at Mississippi State. At Texas A&M, Lars thinks Kevin Sumlin will be gone and the Aggies will look to hire Justin Fuente at Virginia Tech.
And the absolute mess that is Ole Miss, he thinks they'll try to land Chad Morris at SMU. And if Auburn does make a move, one name to keep in mind is Chip Kelly. Lars has heard that whisper for a few weeks. Another name: Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State. Speaking of coaches - one doing a great job this season is Bill Clark at UAB. Lars says this is one of the greatest stories in college football of the last decade. And it's still largely untold.
