Vestavia Hills police officer dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL (WBRC) -

Authorities in Vestavia Hills confirm the police presence on Montgomery Highway was in response to an officer who shot himself.

Police in Vestavia Hills responded to the 1000 block of Montgomery Highway in Vestavia in the parking lot of the Shoppes at City Hall around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived, they found a currently unidentified officer suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment, but he later died.

Officials with Vestavia Police released the following statement about the incident:

On 11/1/17, at approximately 11:30 am, VHPD & VHFD responded to the 1000 blk. of Montgomery Hwy. upon the report of an officer suffering from a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The officer was transported by VHFD to UAB Medical Center for treatment whereupon he succumbed to his wound.
