BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police say a public works employee was shot and killed Wednesday morning while cutting grass.

The shooting happened around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 4100 block of 8th Avenue in Wylam.

The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Grady Jenkins.

Officers were called to the scene. When they arrived, they found Jenkins deceased sitting on a riding lawn mower.

Police say the investigation continues, but they do believe the victim knew the shooter.

“This was no random act by any means. Whoever killed the victim had a motive or an agenda in doing so. We don’t believe his employment had anything to do with it. This family needs comfort and answers right now,” said Sergeant Bryan Shelton with Birmingham PD.
