Mike talked with Mo Finley, owner of One Finley Way Sports™ which helps people, not just athletes, build better by identifying the necessary tools to succeed and motivating them to implement those tools in every facet of their lives. Mo played basketball at UAB and was UAB's 5th all-time leading scorer, a 2-time All-Conference USA Selection and the 2002-2003 Conference USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men's Basketball. He was a member of UAB's 2004 Sweet Sixteen Team. After graduation, Mo became a professional basketball player. For 10 years, he played professional basketball throughout Europe.
Now, he is involved with the Seafood Nutrition Partnership, a national non-profit with the mission to inspire a healthier America by raising awareness about the essential nutritional benefits of eating seafood, and encouraging community members to eat seafood at least twice a week to improve their heart health, as well as their overall health.
Here in Birmingham, we have some of the highest rates of diabetes, obesity and other chronic diseases. We're hoping to provide resources, education and opportunities for residents to live healthier lives by incorporating seafood as part of a well-balanced diet. We are super fortunate to be near the Gulf and have access to fresh, Alabama Gulf Seafood at a variety of shops here in town.
October is National Seafood Month. National Seafood Month is a month dedicated to spreading awareness about the health benefits associated with eating seafood, as well as the accessibility and cost-effectiveness of seafood, two common misconceptions people have about seafood. We are encouraging people to take the Healthy Heart Pledge too, which means they pledge to eat seafood two times a week. They can take the Healthy Heart Pledge at http://www.seafoodnutrition.org/healthy-heart-pledge.html.
