HATTIESBURG, MS (WBRC) - Southern Miss. scored a touchdown on its first offensive play against UAB Saturday.
It would be their only trip to the end zone. The Blazers, however, would make four more trips en route to their 30-12 win over the Golden Eagles.
Whatever happened on USM's 84-yard touchdown seemed to light a fire under UAB. The Blazers blocked the PAT attempt and reeled off a 10-play, 79-yard drive capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Spencer Brown.
USM managed two more field goals before halftime to take a 12-7 lead.
The Blazers took control in the second half with 23-unanswered points and earned something they had been lacking from their resume: a win with style points.
A.J. Erdely completed 16-of-29 passes for 208 yards and a 25-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Pittman. He also ran for a score from a yard out.
Brown rushed for a game-high 209 yards on 33 carries
Darious Williams crushed any hopes Southern Miss had for a comeback with his 41-yard interception return in the game's final minute.
UAB returns home on Saturday for a game against Rice.
