BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

For everyone who believes the Boy Scouts decision to admit girls in the coming year means more opportunity for girls to experience outdoor adventure, one Girl Scout leader believes you don’t know what Girl Scouts do.

Girl Scouts of North Central Alabama CEO Karen Peterlin said the high adventure program offered through Girl Scouts is popular and challenging. In addition, she said single gender programs are proven.

“With us, it's not just a single gender environment. Our programs are girl led. They decide the directions our programs take. Whether its science math technology, high adventure, theatre and arts or cooking or whatever skills they would like,” Peterlin said.

Peterlin said while the Boy Scouts decision has generated conversation, it has created an opportunity for the Girl Scouts to promote what they offer.
