AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

Former Auburn quarterback and "Last Chance U" alumnus John Franklin III is transferring from Auburn University to Florida Atlantic University.

The former Tiger made his announcement via Instagram that he intends on transferring to FAU, where he will play under former Alabama offensive coordinator and current FAU head coach Lane Kiffin.

Head football coach Gus Malzahn confirmed the news Tuesday at a press conference but did not say where Franklin was headed next.

"John Franklin came to me expressing his desire for the chance to play more and get closer to home. He has made the decision to play elsewhere this season as a graduate transfer," Malzahn said.

According to Auburn Athletics, in the 2016 season, Franklin was third on the team in rushing, with 430 yards and 2 touchdowns, and accumulated 204 total yards passing.

Franklin was preparing to make the switch to wide receiver for the Tigers this season prior to his announcement.

Franklin was a transfer from East Mississippi Community College, where he starred on the show "Last Chance U," before coming to Auburn.
