BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Almost two dozen officers were at Wilkerson Middle School Monday morning visiting students for the second annual Blue is True Back to School Rally and Forum.

It's part of the principal's vision to have positive student-officer relationships.

"Another part of the rally is this, the forum where students, police officers, as well as the District Attorney, they all get to learn from each other," said Wilkerson Middle School Principal Davida Johnson.

That's just one of the goals of the rally and forum. It began with the officers from the Birmingham Police Department greeting students and chatting with parents during morning drop off to get students more comfortable around police and reinforce that children must follow rules.

On the flip side, Davida says it gives officers the chance to see students and form relationships before they make mistakes that could cause them to meet again in a different situation. Johnson explains why they did it again this year.

"What was very powerful last year, we had one student, when the officers asked, 'Who was afraid of the police?' they raised their hand. She said she was afraid of the police because her mother was killed by a police officer. So, those officers embraced her. They prayed for her. And, they adopted her as their child," Johnson continued.

A very humid air mass remains parked over Alabama Wednesday night and this will lead to some more patchy fog for the start of the day Thursday. I do think we will see a better coverage of scattered storms.
