BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

It's national "Serve Day" for a lot of churches in our area.

This is a day set aside where congregations give back to people in the community.

One group from Church of the Highlands spruced up Rocky Ridge Elementary in Hoover. Another group from the Worship Center cleaned up around Harrison Park in Birmingham.

Stephanie Rayborn says this is an important day because part of their ministry is serving other.

"What we like to do is make sure that we show that we are the hands and feet of God and that what we've been ordained to do is to come out and help those who are beyond the walls of the church and help other people who might be less fortunate or who might just find themselves living in areas that are heavily littered or crime infested," Rayborn said.

The Worship Center also has a separate Serve Day around the church's anniversary in March.
