Each Spring, YouthServe hosts the only teen-centered event in Birmingham to highlight the accomplishments and service of youth in Birmingham. The inaugural event, Party in the Tunnel, held in 2014, was made possible through a partnership between YouthServe and REV Birmingham to commemorate the unveiling of the lighting display in the 19th Street. We are happy to announce that this year through a partnership with the Birmingham Rotary our party is moving to the Rotary Trail at 20th Street South and First Avenue. This signature event an end-of-the-school-year celebration for teens and is free and open to the public.
This year's Party on the Trail will be held on April 29, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. and will include music, pop-up food vendors, poi performers, jugglers, hoopers, and youth dance troupes. The last two years have seen between 300-400 teens from all backgrounds and more than 60 local middle and high schools represented. Security is strictly enforced by the Birmingham Police Department. Amazing things happen in Birmingham, however, sadly those amazing projects and events are often diminished or overshadowed by the seemingly endless stories of youth-related tragedies. One of our youth participants described Birmingham as being "nationally recognized as ground zero for racial tension." Party on the Trail is one creative way that our youth have identified to combat the negative stigma associated with Birmingham -specifically downtown- as it relates to crime and racial tension, showing the world that not only is their generation ready to make a change in their community, but also to hold themselves to a higher standard of social consciousness.
