RUSTON, La. – It was a historic night for the UAB baseball team on Friday at Louisiana Tech. The Blazers exploded for 14 runs on 19 hits as they earned head coach Brian Shoop’s 1,000th career win. Shoop became just the 80th coach in Division I history and 14th active coach to reach the historic milestone with the 14-9 victory. UAB is now 18-20 this year and 6-10 in Conference USA while the Bulldogs fall to 25-14 and 6-10 in conference.
With his family on-hand, longtime mentor Ron Polk, assistant coaches in Josh Hopper and Perry Roth who have each been with him for eight years or longer, Shoop got teary-eyed after the game specifically when discussing his wife, Brenda.
“My family is amazing and my wife is unbelievable,” said Shoop. “She raised five children and has brought them to every game, forever. I’ll take being married to her over another 1,000 wins. There is no comparison.”
UAB tied a season-high with 14 runs while setting a near season-best with 19 hits in large part due to a 10-run sixth inning. It was the first time the Blazers scored double-digit runs in a frame since scoring 13 against UCF on May 24, 2012.
