Scammers targeting younger demographic with Nintendo Switch

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A post on the Federal Trade Commission’s website is warning consumers about a new scam targeting gamers.

The post warns of ads for “Nintendo Switch” emulators because no such emulator exists and the downloads offered will install, “unwanted applications on your computer. These apps give you misleading information about computer problems that aren’t really there, then ask you to pay to fix them.”

Some of the websites offering the emulator will ask for personal information to get an ‘unlock code’ and FOX19 NOW Tech Expert Dave Hatter said children can be targets for information gathering and identity theft.

“Kids are often a larger target for identity theft than adults,” Hatter said.  “If I can steal, lets say, the social security number of a relatively young child it’s going to be some time probably before anything is done with that social security number.”

The Nintendo Switch is sold out at many retailers and Hatter said the scammers get an “A+ for evil creativity” as the scam appears to target a younger demographic.

A very humid air mass remains parked over Alabama Wednesday night and this will lead to some more patchy fog for the start of the day Thursday. I do think we will see a better coverage of scattered storms.
