Andalusia City Schools were canceled Friday because of a situation that could have compromised safety, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Trooper Kevin Cook said ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating a situation that involved the possibility of compromised safety at one of the Andalusia City Schools. Cook said a juvenile, who has not been named, was arrested Friday morning on undisclosed charges.

Superintendent Ted Watson said school officials were alerted to information throughout the evening and morning hours which warranted the cancellation. He said it is believed the school is safe and this was an isolated incident.

"When given the circumstances I was given, I will 10 times out of 10 make the same decision," Watson said, "and if that's not popular, then that's why I get paid to make sometimes not popular decisions. I believe and am confident that it was the right decision made and investigators who had information would not have wanted to put their kids - and they verbalized that in the situation - that may possibly expose them. I was not going to put people who did not have that same information's children in harm's way."

Watson confirmed the double-header baseball game, which was set to take place at the school baseball fields, has been moved to Lurleen B. Wallace Community College.

“Please know that we take the safety of your students very seriously,” Watson added. ”While it is never possible to predict specific outcomes, inconvenience is a small price to pay for even a hint that student safety might be compromised.”
