On Your Side: Facebook rolling out personal fundraising pages

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Over the next few weeks, Facebook will roll out personal fundraising pages allowing people to raise money for themselves or others.

It's similar to GoFundMe pages.

The social media site is starting with six specific fundraising categories like education, crisis relief and personal emergency. The pages are for people 18 and up.

Facebook does get a small share of the profits. We’re told that money goes to payment processing fees, fundraising vetting and fraud protection.

“Anybody can make these pages and so that’s why you really are going to need to do your research and make sure that the people you are giving to are who they say they are,” Eric Gossett with the Better Business Bureau of Central and South Alabama said.

The BBB says pay close attention to fundraisers that provide little to no information.

If someone is taking donations on someone else’s behalf, double check to make sure its real.

“If somebody contacts you asking for an alternative method of payment, if they are asking you to wire money or sent it through some alternative method other than through the official page, that’s a big red flag,” Gossett added.

Facebook says it does have security measures in place to detect fraud. We’re told the new personal fundraising option is an extension of the charitable giving feature that allows you to donate to nonprofits.
