JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County’s top prosecutor said this week gun and pawn shops have to increase security because of an increase of thefts involving guns.

"Well, it was amazingly shocking that happened to us." Randall Bonner, Manger at Lee’s Pawn in Center Point said.

Lee's Pawn has been a fixture in Center Point for about 26 years. In February, more than a half-dozen guns were stolen

Someone tried to break into the business about three weeks ago but failed.

"It’s pathetic. We do need more security and police even have come around more often and they patrol us.' Bonner said.

Other gun stores in Jefferson County and across the state have been hit. Lee's Pawn has increased its security system.

This week Jefferson County interim District Attorney Danny Carr says illegal guns continue to flood onto the streets and are connected to violent crimes.

"Guns are prevalent in the country. They are being traded and sold they are being on the streets." Carr said.

Gun dealers say thieves can sell guns for a higher price to criminals than what it would cost to buy them legally. Carr says security needs to be stepped up.

"You actually have stores being broken in that need to be much safer as it relates to guns. People are breaking into gun stores. Pawn shops. Stealing, selling them and trading in the black market on the street," Carr said.

Bonner said this problem has grown over the last few years.

"Parents don't control them and it's gotten out of hand,” Bonner said.
