BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Samford junior center fielder Shelby Maze, who went to Mortimer-Jordan High School, is now tied for the national lead in hits with 71 so far this season.

She is 15 hits away from tying the school single-season record and she has a .430 batting average.

"This is cool, at least right now," said Maze. "But right now it doesn’t really mean anything, I just want to keep getting on base, any way I can. Hitting can be so streaky, you know hit or miss, so for right now I’m on a good ride and will keep hitting the best I can."

This season is no fluke - Maze was named the SOCON Freshman of the Year two seasons ago.
